MAPS Regional Conference
This year, the Edith Irby Jones Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), had the pleasure of hosting the SNMA Regional MAPS conference (Region 3). MAPS or Minority Association of Pre-Health Students, represents the undergraduate and post baccalaureate students of SNMA. This initiative of SNMA represents future underrepresented medical students. MAPS members are considered national associate members.
The Edith Irby Jones Chapter of SNMA has helped to establish MAPS chapters in several undergraduate institutions in Arkansas, including The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas State University and Philander Smith College. It is the goal of the new and future administrations of SNMA to establish chapters in every undergraduate institution in the state of Arkansas. Medical students travel to these schools at least once a year to present MAPS membership to students as well as establish a line of open communication between pre-medical and medical students.
The MAPS regional conference held on February 22, 2014 at UAMS was a success, hosting over sixty in- and out-of state premedical students from colleges such as the University of Arkansas, University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Philander Smith College and Oral Roberts University. Region III Regional Director, Jessica I. Edwards (DO candidate [4th year] at the University of North Texas Health Science Center) led one of the many workshops. Participants received information on MCAT preparation, tips on navigating the medical school application process (AMCAS), personal statement guidelines and mock interviews.
